What we keep, and who sees it

The Skin Project is in an early trial. This page says plainly what happens to your data. Last updated 17 October 2026.

Your account

Your email address (or username) and, if you set one, a password stored only as a one-way hash. Everything you add, such as your profile, allergies and sensitivities, shelf, routine, Skin Diary and skin reports, is saved to your account so it's there on any device. It's stored in Amazon Web Services' Mumbai region.

Your selfie

When you ask for a skin analysis, your photo is sent once to Google's Gemini AI to be read (to OpenAI's, only while Google's is down) and then discarded by our server: we don't keep it. What's kept is the report written from it. Your browser keeps a copy of the photo to show beside the report until you close the tab.

Your plan is written by a second AI model (OpenAI's, or Anthropic's while it's down) from the photo's reading and your records, never from the photo itself. Each report says what was shared and with whom.

Sage

Sage's AI answers only after you agree to share with its providers, OpenAI (and Anthropic only while OpenAI is down). With each answer, your question, the conversation and the records Sage reads (Skin Diary notes included) go to them. Without your agreement, Sage answers from your records by fixed rules, with no AI model. Your conversations are saved to your account.

Product labels and barcodes

A photo of an ingredient label you scan is sent to Anthropic's AI to read the list. A barcode is read on your phone where it can be; otherwise (on an iPhone) its photo goes to the same AI to read the number. Neither photo is kept.

Checking our quality

A copy of the text of AI answers and analyses (never your photos) is kept with Langfuse, our monitoring service, so we can see when answers go wrong. We also count a few moments in the app, such as a check made or a report opened, in our own database, kept for 90 days. With your permission (asked in Sage), answers you rated helpful may be used to improve Sage.

What we never do

We don't sell your data or show you ads. The AI providers above receive it only to answer you. Nothing here is a medical diagnosis.

Deleting your data

You can delete any skin report from Skin analysis. To delete your whole account and everything in it, use Send feedback in the app or write to support@theskinproject.co.in from your account's email, and we'll delete it within 7 days.
